Brooklyn Navy Yard

Steel connection design for a unique skylight structure

Brooklyn Navy Yard

About

Brooklyn Navy Yard is adding a unique skylight and signage structures to one of their buildings.

Scope

As part of the steel fabrication process, the steel detailer is responsible for designing steel connections. We are retained by the steel detailer to perform the design and deliver a complete connection design package which includes sketches of the connections and calculations. We work together with the fabricator and the engineer of record to make sure constructability constraints are considered and EOR’s design intent are met.

Our Approach

With our connection design projects, we begin by identifying all unique connections through the structure and coordinate it with the steel detailer. We then proceed to designing individual connections using the loads set by the EOR. In cases where we are able to utilize the detailers model and/or the engineer’s analysis models, we import the connection topology and loads from each respectively. For connections for which loads are not provided or are unclear, we determine reasonable design loads based on the structural design intent we’re provided, and submit it to the EOR for review. For our deliverables, we provide sketches of the connections to be used for coordination and a detailed calculations report for EOR approval.
